Wisdom from the Bible

The bible is full of wisdom. The three poetry books of Job, Psalms and Proverbs in the Old Testament are considered to be the books of wisdom. These are ten selected quotes from the book of Proverbs about ten different topics.

1. Wisdom

‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.’ Proverbs 9:10

2. Prayer

“The Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous.” Proverbs 15:29

3. A good word

‘Anxiety in the heart of a man weighs it down, but a good word makes it glad.’ Proverbs 12:25

4. Not speaking

‘He who despises his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding keeps silent.’ Proverbs 11:12

5. Gossip

‘A perverse man spreads strife, and a slanderer separates intimate friends.’ Proverbs 16:28

6. Temper

‘A fool always loses his temper, but a wise man holds it back.’ Proverbs 29:11

7. Correction

‘Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.’ Proverbs 12:1

8. Adultery

‘The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense; he who would destroy himself does it.’ Proverbs 6:32

9. Learning from ants

‘Go to the ant, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise; which, having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer, and gathers her provisions in the harvest.’ Proverbs 6:6-8

10. Six….seven things

‘There are six things which the Lord hates; yes seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood; a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil; a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife against brothers.’Proverbs 6:16-19
